10+3 year retrospective of Droog Design at Museo Oscar Niemeyer, Curitiba, Brazil. A Studio Jurgen Bey project in collaboration with Ester van de Wiel and Sophie Krier.
The exhibition design evolved from a double wish: the wish to create adequate representation modes for the various activities of the Droog Design foundation, and the wish to use the given context of the travelling exhibition as a design principle.
The latter was achieved by creating flexible settings based on the dynamics of packing and unpacking. The settings were revised according to the specific possibilities of the different museums that hosted the Simply Droog retrospective during the three-year tour.
Part 1. Ten archetypal floor plans of Dutch houses were selected as illustrations of themes such as Inevitable Ornament, Irony, Simplicity or Experience. The floor plans lent a context and a scale to the exhibited objects; the lines of the floor plans were taped directly on the museum floors, as a thin layer of reality. Objects on display were placed on top of corresponding drawings of objects materialised as rubber cut-outs. The result is a partly planned and partly unplanned setting.
Part 2. All other activities are collected in ‘the archives’. This part of the exhibition consists of the transport crates stacked chronologically into a gigantic timeline: an invitation towards the visitor to read the history of Simply Droog in terms of volumes, sizes and amounts of crates. Crate stickers offer a more detailed reading of all the objects, designers, commissioners and events connected to Simply Droog throughout the years.
The chosen exhibition modes in part 1 and part 2 have one wish in common: letting the story of Simply Droog speak for itself as much as possible.
