Atelier Sophie Krier explores the peripheries of the design field, with a focus on film, writing and temporary interventions. Favorite commissions include editing books and assembling exhibitions. Self-taught areas of interest include the built and natural landscape, and the ethical dimensions of design. Atelier Sophie Krier is currently curating a series of symposia on education, craft, and play in parallel to doing research on emerging design processes for her journal Field Essays. Sophie Krier (1976, Belgium-Luxemburg) lives and works in Rotterdam. She graduated cum laude from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 1999 with Fake, a research project revolving around set design. Amongst her main clients are the Graphic Design Museum, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean (Luxemburg), TENT, MU Witte Dame, CBK Utrecht, Rotterdamse Schouwburg, Studio Makkink & Bey, Li Edelkoort, The Dutch Ambassy, BNO, and Premsela. Krier has received research grants from the Netherlands Foundation of Visual Arts and Design and from CBK Rotterdam.
Sophie Krier has been involved in education since 2002. Between 2004 and 2009 she was head of department at designLAB (Rietveld Academie), where she developed the Wintergarden and Travelling Academy models. She lectures regularly and conducts international workshops, among others for Otis (Los Angeles), Centro (Mexico), IED (Barcelona), AXIS (Tokyo) and Cranbrook (Detroit).
