Samen Ben je een natuur- kunst- en/of muziekliefhebber en wil je zelf blaasinstrumenten leren maken van natuurlijke materialen? Op zaterdagochtend 18 mei organiseert Hunnie een workshop met wilgenexpert Jan van Schaik en professionele blokfluitist Thomas Triesschijn. Hunnie Fluit is onderdeel van een jaarlang veldonderzoek van ontwerpers Sophie Krier en Henriëtte Waal dat naast een serie natuuravonturen ook een veldwerkplek, gebiedseigen producten en een buitenuitrusting voor de Bovenlandenpolder in het Groene Hart realiseert. 13.04.2013 Hunnie Wilgen Vlechten
Met het veldonderzoek Hunnie onderzoek ik i.s.m. collega ontwerper Henriëtte Waal nieuwe vormen van seizoensrecreatie in het karakteristieke landschap rondom Wilnis: wij ontwerpen ervaringen gebaseerd op gebiedseigen kennis en gebruiken. Nu de agrarische functie van De Bovenlanden grotendeels overgaat in natuurontwikkeling onderzoekt Hunnie middels een seizoensgebonden programma de rol van de mens in dit veranderende landschap. Inzet van de avonturen is de oplevering van een veldwerkplek, gebiedseigen producten en buitenuitrusting die in dienst staan van het gebied en haar huidige en toekomstige liefhebbers. Op 13 april brengen we de Bovenlandse traditie van het varen èn het ambacht van wilgen vlechten bij elkaar in een avontuur voor Veenmollen, de jeugnatuurclub van het Instituut voor natuureducatie en duurzaamheid (IVN). We will exercise discipline of work and test how (un)productive we can be in 3x8 hours, individually and as a group. The goal of this session is to find a focus and way of working that makes use of the assets each of you posseses. It demands you make choices, confront your flaws and kill darlings in the process if needed. Samen met grafisch ontwerper Brigiet van den Berg vorm ik het vierde meester-gezel team dat tot juni artistiek onderzoek doet naar schuld in opdracht van No Academy & Het Instituut. Onderwerp van ons onderzoek is de beeldtaal van schuld (en meer precies, het ontbreken ervan). Er lijkt sprake te zijn van een breed ingebed fenomeen waar geen genuanceerd beeld van is. "Je moet je een voorstelling van iets kunnen maken om het te kunnen begrijpen" Met deze uitspraak vat filosofe Nikki Brörmann, die met een essay over het belang van visualisatie aan ons onderzoek bijdraagt, onze ontwerpopgave samen: het tegen het licht houden van de blinde vlekken rond schuld door de beeldtaal ervan te analyseren en onder te brengen in een (denkbeeldige) Beeld Bank.

Een nieuwerwetse polderjacht. Tijdens Hunnie Jagen leren lokale deelnemers en buitenstanders de omgeving van De Bovenlanden op een ongewone manier kennen. Kruipend door het riet, dekking zoekend achter landhekken en een schilderij beschietend in een geriefhoutbosje. Door een taaltoets en veldtraining ervaren zij De Bovenlanden vanuit het perspectief van wildbeheer, maar ook door de ogen van de dieren die er wonen. Hunnie Jagen sluit af met het maken van een beeldende jachttrofee en een warme lunch met superlokaal wildbraad bereid door gastheer Raymond Richard...

In parallel with the exhibition ‘Orban Space’ in Stroom, students of Research Lab Next Door study the process and ideas of urbanist and conceptual thinker Luc Deleu. Instruments to measure and register phenomena in the public space of the Schilderswijk are currently in development. Research Lab Next Door is an interdisciplinary research lab, initiated in September 2012 by the faculty of Interior Architecture / Furniture Design of the KABK in partnership with DRS22. 28.01.2013 Studio for Immediate Spaces @ Wongema
Graduation kick off at Wongema. To launch the Graduation Studio, I've asked the MA Sandberg students to make their first idea in a material of their choice. On Feb 28, March 1 & 2 we will jointly travel to Wongema, a work residency located on the most Northern point of the province of Groningen, in Hoornhuizen. Wongema founder and graphic designer Erik Wong calls his residency ‘a home at the end of the world’. The remote landscape around Wongema hides very specific worlds (a medieval tower, the home of a poet and landscape monk...) – the residency is an exercise in scarcity of means can be a productive agent of work.

Studio for Immediate Spaces is the new Master programme for Interior Architecture at the Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam. I will teach there the coming months. My first conversation with the graduation class of 2013 will take the form of a show at INexactlythis, the 2012 Kunstvlaai manifestation, opening Nov 23 2012, 3 pm-1 am. What are the sources of your work? How do you (want to) work? Which images and objects embody these? And what visual narrative do they construct together? With the above questions as points of departure, the Graduation Class of 2013 will present the motives and sources behind their work. The collective research "Art Education: A Glossary", tutored by Tom Vandeputte will accompany the individual view points.

Hunnie nodigt natuur- en kunstliefhebbers uit als deelnemer van het eerste avontuur Hunnie Klei Putten op zaterdag 3 november 2012 (natuurwerkdag) van 14.00 tot 17.00 uur. Op die dag wordt er voor het eerst sinds meer dan honderd jaar weer klei geput uit de historische kleiputten van dit veenweidegebied. Met veldlezingen van natuurliefhebber en biochemicus Jan van ‘t Riet, vliegvisser Kees de Vries, adviseur publieke ruimte Hans van de Markt en ontwerper Mara Skujeniece. 21.10.2012 Field Essays, Issue One: Every Object Contains An Image
Every issue of this self-initiated journal is a renewed attempt at formulating a visual grammar of design research. Ultimately, Field Essays strives to emancipate the design process from its instructional role by gaining understanding and contextualizing its nature and manifestations.This issue juxtaposes the work of designer Jonathan Muecke (USA) and photographer Bas Princen (NL). On Sunday Oct 21 at 4 pm, Field Essays will be released at Onomatopee with a double lecture by Muecke and Princen, followed by a conversation about the underlying motives of their work. Planned release: January 2013. Field Essays, Issue One is supported by a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. 22.09.2012 UNIBZ Design Festival: Learning
On sept 22 I will give a lecture in Bolzano (I) together with Cynthia Hathaway at the UNIBZ Design Festival on Learning. Our topic will be The Networked Landscape, a field research which took place during Utrecht Manifest NO.4, Biennal for Social Design. Questions we will address include: What happens if you make existing skills and talents of a neighbourhood visible – are new cross-pollinations possible? What can we learn from each other's expertise? Can we build a new language of work? What kind of visual grammar do we need for that? While Cynthia Hathaway will focus on her pilot project Car Mekka, I will discuss the project's main aims, tactics and insights.

Long-term project in collaboration with TENT, CBK Rotterdam and Thorbecke Creative College. In Tijdelijk Zonder Titel (Temporarily Untitled) a group of 25 secondary school pupils will conduct an artistic investigation of twelve weeks under my supervision. Over the past half year, I took part in discussions to define the public space research focus of DRS22 (Design Research Station), located in the Schilderswijk area of The Hague. The projects conducted there by initiators van Ed van Hinte and Renate Boere concern lightweight building and communication. The public domain of the area will be explored in turns by Krijn Christiaansen (street regulation), Cathelijne Montens (street craftsmanship), Claudia Linders (new forms of communities) and myself (the street as a stage), in conjunction with students of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.

Over last year I have been doing research and preparing a symposium on invitation of the MUDAM, Luxembourg. The leading question is: what added value bring to Luxembourg's business, education and culture? 12.01.2012 - Field Essays at the Icelandic Academy of Arts
Field Essays was invited to conduct a workshop to the graduation group of this year, as a way to prepare them for their personal projects. The week started with process talks, after which the students took their personal interests to an area I had selected with Brynhildur Palsdottir, former student and now a freelance teacher at the academy. The area of Vellir 7 was pauzed for a yet undeterminate time in 2008 in the aftermath of the Ice Save crisis, leaving empty streets and lightpoles amidst lava fields. 17.12.11 - I (still) DON'T KNOW WHERE I'M GOING BUT I WANT TO BE THERE
Coming Saturday, Paradiso will host the yearly MOTI symposium. This year is my third edition as a curator, and we will explore the meaning of images in a culture of visual surplus. What do we manipulate, make and share images and how do they in turn influence our actions and thoughts? What are critical consequences of today's visual culture? With among others Paola Antonelli, Matthieu Laurette, Tracy Metz, Mark Changizi, Peter Kennard, Bas Kosters, Florian Göttke, Dan Perjovschi, Lex Runderkamp. 08.12.11 - Utrecht Manifest kick-off
I have been invited by UM artistic director Jurgen Bey to curate a follow up project of "ICI, Casa" for the Social Design Biennale of Utrecht Manifest, due to go public on May 1, 2012. Ester van de Wiel will also curate a project and Christel Vesters will develop a theoretical backbone for the three projects. On a stormy thursday night, a soup machine, a human sirene and an automated spraypaint poem formed the poetic kick-off of the 'researching-by-doing' residencies to come, which will explore the notion Het Nieuwe Werk Landschap (The New Work Landscape) - how can you develop an area, drawing on work related qualities? Together with co-curator Erik Wong of Wongema, I plan to map and publish the miscalleneous expertise and ambition of the Rotsoord area inhabitants, entrepreneurs and industries. In a second phase, designers and design students will be invited to test this alternative Gouden Gids in practice.

At last the nominees for the Rotterdam Designprijs are public! I nominated Monique van Heist with Hellofashion, Ester van de Wiel with Eetbaar Landschap / NUHIER / Werkplaats Buijtenland, and Matthijs Munnik with Microscopic Opera. 17.11.11 - Field Essays @ TENT | Face Value
Field Essays is exhibited in Face Value, a current exhibition in TENT Rotterdam about the autonomous research component of four design practices. My co-exhibitors are Bertjan Pot, 75B and Marga Weimans. Next to the mind space I made for the questions that inhabit Field Essays, I've finally completed a filmed portrait of my grandparents, who exercised the profession of tailor and hat maker. The film retraces the big and small events that shaped their lives, and draws links to the role of craftsmanship in my own practice. With thanks to Roel van Tour for helping the edit the gathered fragments into a delicate visual poem. Face Value runs till January 8, 2012. The photograph depicts Force Field by Jonathan Muecke and on the left, Port Arthur by Bas Princen. A Field Essays with Muecke and Princen will be realised in spring 2012.

At last my temporary radio station PPPPPPPlateau is on air! A 35'' imaginary conversation played in a loop narrates the many realities of Kirchberg in Luxembourg city. The Streekmuseum Hoeksche Waard will re-open its doors next year and my studio is in charge of the exhibition design and strategic choices of this regional museum, whose collection consists solely of gifts from the inhabitants of the island. The project I proposed with Henriëtte Waal for the polder area De Bovenlanden in Het Groene Hart won the pitch. (Yeah!) In answer to the question of how to disclose the area on a mental and recreational level, we got into contact with local users, and produced a beautiful book with the help of graphic-designer-to -be Daphne Ouwerkerk. My new atelier & house nearby the Graafflorisstraat is not only a beautiful place but also a network hub. Eline Kunz, the perfect office manager I was looking for since a while, turned out to live around the corner. Eline is a production manager for film and events, works as a programmer for Oerol and is currently also working for the Karavaan. In the snapshot above Eline is doing a last minute spelling check with Henriëtte and Daphne slightly tense by her side...

Vanaf vandaag is 3 weekenden lang de tentoonstelling 'Zwervende Erven' (Pers bericht) te zien in Fort Pannerden te Doornenburg. Aanleiding is een nationale prijsvraag waarvoor architecten, kunstenaars, vormgevers én amateurs uitgedaagd zijn om een voorstel in te dienen voor eeen tijdelijk verblijf, dat de bezoeker van de manifestatie volgend jaar zomer uitnodigt te genieten van de prachtige natuur en het rivierenlandschap. Het materiaal waarmee wordt gewerkt is klei en/of baksteen, rijkelijk voorradig door de aanwezigheid van de Rijn, de Waal en de Linge. Voor de gelegenheid hebben Mara Skujeniece en ik onze krachten gebundeld voor ons ontwerp getiteld 'Voorlopig', een voorstel voor een tijdelijk pad dat zichzelf met bemoeienis van wandelaars zal verplaatsen (of niet), een zomer lang, langs een aantal eveneens vergankelijke mijlpalen.

TENT. viert dit najaar haar tienjarig bestaan en presenteert van 9 september tot en met 15 november 2oo9 de jubileummanifestatie BLURRR. TENT. laat een nieuwe culturele praktijk zien waarin de jonge kunstenaar de grenzen van verschillende disciplines voorbijgaat en zich presenteert als homo universalis 2.0.

Kabouterlezing in Pier-K, Harmoniestraat 2, Nieuw-Vennep, 28 juni, aanvang 11.00 langlevedetijdelijkheid
De kabouterlezing en -prijsuitreiking vormt het slot van de kabouterrevolutie: centraal staat de gedachte dat kabouters harde werkers zijn en - als niemand kijkt - zaken kunnen verwezenlijken die anderen niet, of niet zo snel voor elkaar zouden kunnen krijgen. De kabouter wordt als metafoor en middel gebruikt om kinderen uit Nieuw-Vennep en omstreken te laten meedenken over wat ze leuk vinden aan hun leefomgeving en te laten fantaseren over wat er nog ontbreekt voor hen. In de kabouterlezing worden wens en werkelijkheid met elkaar vermengd.

Horge Pérez invited me to conceive a workshop at IED, Barcelona. The workshop will revisit issues I addressed in Warsaw with designLAB: Representing peculiar local habits and mémé in a model; using mimicry and scale to abstract one's findings; understanding the model's autonomous qualities and projecting these into a new entrepreneurial context. A series of short video interventions in the city of Warsaw, designLAB's field studio for ten (cold!!) days during our annual wintergarden. In the videos the students investigate transition zones and lines of the city. The film documents the results of one week of fieldwork by designLAB students in the oldest light district of Istanbul. Our brief: to explore the qualities of the Sishane network in order to understand if and how it can transform itself, in the light of current political and economical threats. 'Shine on Sishane' is the first of a series of research projects in cities this year by designLAB, which is the design research laboratory which I run at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. I have started my research on the dynamics of today's duo's in art and design. How do elements such as perspective, overlap, friction, misunderstanding influence the final, collective work? The research is done within the Professorship or Art and Public Space of the Rietveld Academy, which is led by Jeroen Boomgaard. Check www.lkpr.nl for more information on fellow researchers. 10.03.2008 - Prendre la tangeante: pratiques d'aujourd'hui pour un design de demain
Paris based editor Dis Voir (www.disvoir.com) has asked me to curate the next "Collection Design" . In the next five years I will edit 10 books, each of which will address a specific way of doing design. The first one is due to be published in January 2009. It deals with the idea of "taking the tangent line", a french expression which more or less means "to make off", to "elude" the main way. It's also linked to the idea of drawing one's "ligne de fuite", one's "vanishing line". The book will feature contemporary projects from fashion, architecture and design.

Het Wintertuinproject "dit jaar voor de derde keer georganiseerd - is bedoeld - om studenten aan het begin van het jaar te injecteren met nieuwe perspectieven, energie, ideeën en werkmethodes. Het is als een refresh-button", aldus Sophie Krier, coördinator Design Lab. Rain/Regen is het thema van Wintertuin 2008, een experimenteel project waaraan drie afdelingen van de Gerrit Rietveld Academie meewerken: Studenten van TXT (textiel), Design Lab en Mode presenteren vrijdag 22 februari hun werk op de expositie "Making Rain" in het Asscher-gebouw in de Pijp, Amsterdam.

Met Karin Daan en Sophie Krier. Moderator: Cornel Bierens. Initiatief www.ontwerpwerk.nl Onder de titel Design: toen, nu en morgen organiseert Ontwerpwerk een serie van 4 debatten over verleden, heden en toekomst van design. Elke avond staat een andere ontwerpdiscipline centraal: product vormgeving, visuele communicatie, vormgeving van de openbare ruimte en digitale vormgeving. Binnen de disciplines vragen we een bekende ontwerper van voor het digitale tijdperk en een jonge ontwerper met een duidelijk hedendaagse signatuur. Ieder vertelt over zijn/haar drijfveren en laat daarbij een aantal beelden zien van eigen werk en/of inspiratie. Na de pauze gaan zij onder leiding van een professionele moderator in discussie met elkaar en met het publiek. Hoe keken ontwerpers vroeger tegen hun vak aan? Wat is er veranderd? Wat zijn de verwachtingen voor de toekomst?

For the exhibition the Lungomare Gallery invited designers of different ages, places of origin and cultural affiliation who deal with the production and creation of objects, and asked them to submit an object of their choice, together with a biography of the object itself. Op 16 juni opent de expositie 'Hand on Movement - Crafted form in dialogue' in Lilljevalchs, Stockholm. Studio Makkink Bey heeft mij gevraagd om met mijn films een verhalende laag toe te voegen aan zijn expositie. Een vijftal van mijn 'Més-aventures' (een frans woordspel dat zowel 'mijn avonturen' als ''tegenvallers'' betekent) zal op, naast, tussen en onder Jurgen's werk verschijnen en verdwijnen, om zo een dubbele laag te geven aan het zichtbare. 02.06.2007 - Buurtbanken voor Vissershop te Zaanstad
Op 22 juni viert Vissershop feest en worden vier Buurtbanken overgedragen aan de bewoners van deze kleine inham van de Zaan. De banken zijn een project van Studio Makkink Bey i.s.m. Sophie Krier. Het verdedelen van basismateriaal is een nijverheidstraditie in Zaanstad. Voor dit ontwerp zijn basisplanken intensief bewerkt tot rijke constructiedelen. De banken zijn plank voor plank opgebouwd tot gelaagde zitplekken aan de Zaan, steeds met een eigen kleur- en maatvoering.

Aankomend pinksterweekend (zondag 27 en maandag 28 mei) is er weer een editie van 'Rietveld naar de Beurs'. Studenten en oud-studenten van de Gerrit Rietveld Academie presenteren en verkopen eigen, in oplage gemaakte producten in de Beurs van Berlage.Krijn Christiaansen en Kusters& Montens tekenen voor de inrichting. I am working on a new moving image (bewegend beeld) with the working title 'Zetel van het verstand'. It's going to be about my working process and it's related to the personality of the clown - his readyness to say YES no matter what, his intelligent use of stupidity, his talent for improvisation and his attention for the world that surrounds him.. Buster Keaton's slapstick is a precious inspiration source too. The image is by photographer Roel van Tour, who in his work documents reality as if it was a dream...

The website of Design Lab, the design department of the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, will officially be launched on Open Day the 26th of January. Guest designers Christiaansen en Montens have put together a mini exhibit of current projects with the students. I'm preparing a discussion around the dilemma of ornament, which will take place at one pm.
